The weights these guys throw around made the rest of us look bad, so we gave them a place of their own.

Bench
20kg x10
40kg x10
60kg x7
70kg x6, 5, 5, 4

JM press
40kg x10, 3 sets

Flyes
10kg x8, 10, 10

Chinups
BW x6, 3 sets

Barbell curl
30kg x8
20kg x10

Tried a new exercise today, the JM press. Basically it's a close grip bench press, except the bar comes down on to your shoulders and your elbows stay tucked in. Last workout before North Islands. Gonna eat heaps and sleep heaps so should hopefully smash some weights there.

BW 69.36kgs
Division U74kg SubJunior (18y/o)
Raw (Knee wraps, belt and wrist wraps)

Squat
150kg WWW
165kg WWW
180kg WWW (+40kg comp PB) (+20kg PB)

Bench
90kg RWW
95kg RRR
95kg RRR

Deadlift
170kg WWW
190kg WWW (+10kg PB)
200kg RRR

Total
460kg (1012 pounds) (+80kg comp total PB)

Got the 1000 pound total! Yeah buddy! Would've gone for setting some NZ powerlifting U74kg SubJunior records but unfortunately I've only been registered for 4 months and you need to be registered for at least 6 months to set records :(

Squats were awesome, I was a bit apprehensive at the start of the day about getting 180kg. 150 was a warmup, easy as. 165kgs wasn't as fast, a little pause halfway up but still no problem. I was pretty nervous about 180kgs but I needn't have worried. It was easier than the 165kgs, in fact! 190kgs was definitely there, but that's for next time.

Bench was quite disappointing. No PB on the bench today :? First attempt with 90kgs was slow too and got a red light for moving my foot around. The attempts with 95kgs stopped 2 inches off the chest. Bench is really lagging so am thinking of doing an intense bench program to bring it up to par.

Opened on 170kgs for deadlifts which was really a warmup. Jumped 20kgs to 190kgs, which was a 10kg PB. This was a battle. Goal coming into this comp was 200kg deadlift so I really hyped myself up for my last lift of the day. It came off the floor okay, with speed and got it past my knees. My hamstrings weren't strong enough to carry it through though so I had to drop it back on the floor.

I think (?) I came 2nd in the U74kg weight class after Ben Haughey who had an easy 500kg total, he's done 600kgs before. He just wanted to set the U74kg Open record in the deadlift but unfortunately he couldn't quite get 251kgs. Some nice lifting by the Red Machine today and good spotting by tinytraps. Neil Lauaki nearly squatted 380kgs but the bar ended up on the ground as it proved too heavy for the 5 spotters! :D Great squats and deadlifts by BarBrother too, 280kgs and 270kgs respectively I think?

Looking forward to the next comp, probably the WBOP champs in April. If I hit 200kg squat, 110kg bench and 220kg deadlift raw there, I'll look into getting some suits and shirts to start handling some really heavy weights!

Awesome lifting Tom, you've come so far in such a short amount of time, really impressive mate

Serious, that 200/110/220 total must be damn close, and that would be completely epic for an unequipped sub-junior... at 70-odd kg too

Stick at it bro, you could do some really great things if you keep heading in this direction

Just did 140kg x8 with no belt to console myself

Shit man. I've had like a year on you, so don't be gutted or anything. That's some strong lifts for one year and your age. AND AN ASIAN! That's more of a compliment than racism.
